YOGA REVIEW ACTION

(V)

Summary of Fifth Speech:

Despite Sri Krishna's clear instructions, Arjuna still seems confused. You want to know exactly what is higher, how to act or how to discard action.

The Lord says that both methods lead to the highest purpose of God. For both of these purposes the ultimate fulfillment of Atman is a goal, but the path to Karma Yoga is superior. There is really no real difference between the two.

Krishna also affirms that perfection can be attained and that one can be established in Atman only after the mind has been purified by performing a self-sacrificing act. Karma Yogi who knows about Atman and who always does things knows that although intelligence, mind and senses work, he does nothing. He is a spectator of everything. He surrenders all his deeds to the Lord and therefore leaves the attachment, remains pure and untouched. He is totally devoted to Divine Shakti. Having completely destroyed all desires, attachments and self-esteem, he was not born again.

The scholar who has seen Brahman and is constantly absorbed in it We cannot be born again. Such a scholar sees Brahman inside and out — inside as Brahman standing and transcending, and outside everywhere. You see the One Self in every creature and creature — cow, elephant, even dog and chase. He remains free from happiness and sorrow and enjoys peace and eternal happiness. He does not rely on hearts to satisfy himself. Nerve pleasures, on the other hand, are a source of pain. They do not cease. Sri Krishna reminds Arjuna that desire is a major cause of pain and suffering. It is the cause of anger. Therefore, the aspirant should try to eliminate desire and anger if he is to reach the Most High.

The Lord concludes by explaining how to control the senses, mind and understanding by focusing between the eyebrows and making Pranayama. He who has gained complete control of the outgoing nerves and is freed from desire, anger and fear finds freedom and enjoys complete peace.

3. He should be known as an endless Sannyasin who does not hate or desire; for, free from contradictory pairs, O mighty Arjuna, he is easily freed from bondage!

ANSWER: A man does not become a Sannyasin by simply quitting because of laziness, ignorance, family quarrels or disaster or unemployment. A real Sannyasin is one who has no attachments or dislikes. Getting rid of clutter may not be the answer. What is needed is the abandonment of selfishness and desires.
